Overview:
The Engine Room Resource Management (ERRM) course is designed to improve the safety, efficiency, and coordination of engine room operations aboard vessels. This course focuses on the human factors involved in managing the engine room team, ensuring that resources—both human and technical—are used effectively to optimize performance and reduce risk. The training emphasizes communication, teamwork, decision-making, and the safe operation of engineering equipment. It incorporates practical exercises and simulations to help participants understand how to manage engine room resources in both routine operations and emergency situations.
By the end of the course, students will:
- Have a clear understanding of how to coordinate and lead an engine room team, ensuring effective use of resources.
- Be equipped with strong communication and leadership skills, enabling seamless collaboration between engine room staff and other ship departments.
- Gain practical experience in decision-making and problem-solving under normal and emergency conditions.
- Learn how to identify and manage risks, minimize errors, and maintain a culture of safety in the engine room.
- Take away a solid foundation for managing engine room operations efficiently, from routine maintenance to crisis management, improving both safety and operational performance.
- Be better prepared to handle complex engine room scenarios, optimizing crew performance and operational efficiency.
Prerequisites:
Participants should have a background in marine engineering or hold a Certificate of Competence for an engineering officer. Prior knowledge of fundamental safety procedures, either through previous training or experience, is often recommended. While not always mandatory, experience working in engine rooms or on similar technical operations is beneficial for understanding the course material.
Duration:
The average duration of an ERRM course is approximately 3 to 4 days.
